How to Decorate Mason Jars for Christmas Gifts

Let’s jump in! Here are a few fun ideas to decorate mason jars for gift giving. Choose just one, or combine a couple of these ideas however you like.

Decorate a mason jar with ribbon.

Ribbon and string are simple enough to figure out; cut a piece that is long enough to go around the lid once (or even twice!) and then a little more.

You can either use scissors to curl the two ends of the ribbon, or tie them into a cute little bow. Easy peasy – the only difficulty you might encounter is trying to get the ribbon to stay in place while tying the ends together.

Ask someone to help hold it if needed. Seriously, it doesn’t get any easier than that. 🙂

Jute twine is another cute and simple alternative that will give your gift a slightly more rustic look.

Decorate the mason jar lid with fabric.

A small piece of Christmas patterned fabric adds a creative touch to the lid of the mason jar.

You have two options:

The first is to trace the lid onto a piece of fabric and cut out the circle. Place the circle on top of the lid, securing it in place with the outer ring, before placing the lid on the jar.

The second option is to do the same thing, only cutting a square piece of fabric so it hangs below the ring part of the lid.

Either way, you’ll end up with a super cute gift in a jar!

Add a splash of color with scrapbook paper.

Don’t have any fabric on hand? Use Christmasy scrapbooking paper instead!

Trace the lid onto the back of a piece of scrapbook paper, cut out the circle, and secure it in place between the lid and the outer ring.

Add a piece of coordinating ribbon to the lid for a little extra flair.

Paint the mason jar for gift giving.

A coat of paint will hide the contents of the mason jar, while adding a decorative touch. A couple coats of spray paint should provide a nice, even finish.

Metallic colors, like gold and silver, give jars a neat look. Even better if you have a glittery metallic paint to decorate your mason jars for gift giving.

My daughter and I did the one where you wrap cheesecloth around mason jars, to make mummies then glued on google eyes. Add a battery tea light in there and it’s super cute and fun!
