Awesome Job Ideas for the Stay at Home Mom Entrepreneur
Are you a stay at home mom looking for ways to earn a little extra money — or possibly a full time income — from the comfort of your own home? Continue reading for my top ten side business ideas for stay at home moms.
You might be a stay at home mom for a number of reasons.
In today’s world, though, it can be difficult to support a family with just one income.
If you are looking for side business ideas or jobs for stay at home moms so you can earn an income while saving money on daycare costs, take heart! There are limitless ways to earn money from home.
I have put together a list of ten of the most common side business ideas for stay at home moms. The list has some of the more traditional work from home businesses, as well as a few online business opportunities.
Before making your decision, it’s best to consider your passions and talents.
If you’re terrible at spelling, then writing and proofreading probably aren’t the best choices for you. If you don’t really enjoy being around children that aren’t your own, then you probably won’t last long as a daycare provider. But if you really love talking to people and are a great salesperson, direct sales could be a good route to go.
Without further ado, here is a list of the top ten side business ideas and jobs for stay at home moms.
10 Stay at Home Mom Entrepreneur Job Ideas
Which of these ten stay at home mom entrepreneur jobs will you choose?
1. Freelance Writer
Got mad writing skills? There are a number of freelance writing websites to get started making money from home. The pay isn’t exactly the highest, but it can be a good way to get started making a few dollars.
That’s how I got started working from home about ten years ago. I signed up for a writing site called Associated Content (which is no longer around, by the way), never thinking I’d actually make any money.
Well, I submitted my first few articles and, much to my surprise, they were actually accepted! I wrote there for a few years, along with various other writing sites.
Fiverr.com, Textbroker.com, and Upwork.com are a few places to start looking for stay at home mom jobs. There are many others out there, just do your research and make sure they are legit before investing too much time into them.
Eventually, you might want to start taking on your own clients. You will need to create a website (an “authority” site) and start advertising your services. This could be a simple website or even a blog (see #3 below for more info on getting started blogging).
2. Professional Proofreader
Did you breeze through High School English class?
Proofreading is one of those business ideas for stay at home moms who find themselves pointing out spelling and grammatical errors in daily life (yes, I do it too!).
(Although, before you start pointing out errors in this post, I admittedly need to brush up on my proofreading skills!)
Anyway, until clients start coming to you, there are various websites that can help you get your proofreading business started. Check out Fiverr.com and Upwork.com to find some proofreading work.
Like I mentioned in the last section, another option is to start taking on your own client. But to do that, you need to have some sort of authority site, whether it’s a website or a blog.
3. Blogger
Blogging sounds fun and glamorous, but it’s also a lot of work.
However, if you are willing to put in the work, it can be a profitable business idea for stay at home moms. There are numerous ways to monetize a blog, from affiliate marketing to sponsored posts and more.
Not sure where to start? Here’s a good starting point: Take the 5 Day Start A Money Making Blog Crash Course (it’s free!) from It’s a Lovely Life blog.
This email course will walk you through each of the steps to starting a blog, from choosing your niche and domain name to monetizing your blog.
Once you have your blog set up, I highly recommend taking their 30-day blogging blastoff, which really gets into the various aspects of creating a blogging business, from the legal pages to pitching brands for sponsored posts.
When you take this course, you will get a LOT of bang for your buck!
You can find the 30-day blogging course here (a new class starts on the first day of each month), along with a list of all their other available classes.
4. Online Course Creator
E-courses are becoming increasingly popular and, if you find the right niche, they can be profitable.
Is there a topic you know in depth that you would enjoy sharing with others? If not, do the research and teach yourself whatever it is that you would like to know. Then, create an online course to share the knowledge.
There are people who will pay you to teach them exactly what they need to know, rather than having to spend time teaching themselves.
If you are interested in learning how to create your own online courses, check out the FREE class called Create a Profitable Course.

5. Affiliate Marketer
Believe it or not, you can actually make money promoting products that you use and love. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of affiliate marketing opportunities!
The best way to get started? Make a list of the products you love and want to share with others.
If you’re a blogger, come up with product ideas (whether physical or digital) that fit within your niche. Then go to each company’s website and see if they have an affiliate program.
Another option is to go through an affiliate network, such as Amazon Associates and Share-a-Sale.
Ultimate Bundles is another affiliate program that I love; they bundle digital products, and you will earn a generous 40% (simply as an affiliate) or 70% (if you’re a contributor) commission from each bundle you sell. Plus, they give you all the tools you need to successfully promote their products.
Once you sign up for an affiliate program, you will receive special links that will track your sales. Then you can promote these products in a number of ways, such as social media, email, and your website or blog.
6. Photographer
If you have a decent camera and an eye for capturing the perfect shot, you might consider doing photography as your work from home business.
You will still have to leave the house on occasion — which could be a good thing! — but would be able to do the rest of your work from home.
You’re not just limited to doing family photography, or weddings, newborns, and so on…
If you prefer, you could submit stock photography to websites like Shutterstock, iStockPhoto, or Adobe Stock Photo. I haven’t done this personally, so I can’t attest to the income possibilities of doing this.
Another option is to simply do photo editing, and you can find freelance gigs on marketplaces such as Upwork, Guru, and Fiverr.
7. Video Editor
Are you skilled at filming videos? How about editing them to make them even better?
Videography and video editing are a couple more side business ideas for stay at home moms. Yes, there are people out there who will pay you to edit their videos!
Upwork, Guru, and Fiverr are good places to get started looking for video editing work, as are Freelancer and Outsourcely.
8. Daycare Provider
Love having kids around? Childcare is another way for stay at home moms to make some extra money.
Besides, what’s a few more kids running around the house…right?! Well, as long as you don’t mind things getting a little crazy every once in a while.
It’s certainly not for everyone, though — especially if you don’t particularly enjoy being around kids who aren’t your own, or if you get easily overwhelmed.
But if you have the right mindset and your home can accommodate extra children, childcare could be a rewarding home business for you.
To do it right from the start, though, be sure to do your research, and treat your in-home daycare like a business. This means getting licensed (checking requirements for your state), tracking financials, and so on.
9. Errand Runner
Picking up groceries…giving rides….
Admittedly, it could be tough when you have kids.
But if you can manage to run errands while another family member is around to watch them, running errands and giving rides are interesting business ideas for stay at home moms (and reasons to get out of the house!).
Uber, Lyft, Instacart, and Door Dash are a few places to get started running errands.
10. Direct Sales Rep
You’re probably familiar with a few different direct sales companies, sometimes called mlm (multi-level marketing) companies.
There is a direct sales company for nearly every type of product, from makeup and personal care to clothing, books, home goods, food, CBD oil, and more.
It helps if you are a natural salesperson, but you don’t necessarily have to be a “people person” to sell the products you love.
In today’s world, your customers can purchase your product online. This way, you neither have to place the order nor deliver their product — it goes straight to their doorstep!
Online parties are popular right now, and they are a great way to generate excitement while showcasing everything you have to offer.
Not sure whether you can do it? Keep in mind that most direct sales companies provide lots of training and tools to help you be as successful as you want to be.
